Pitcher plant, nepenthes alata

LIGHT Partial to full sun in a west or shaded south window. If outside, they like partial shade to full sun.

WATER These are bog plants so theymust be kept moist to wet at all times. Use pure water (distilled, reverse osmosis) or rain water. Sit the pot in a tray filled with water about 1/4 of the way up from the bottom of the pot when watering.

FERTILIZER Do not fertilize carnivorous plants. Carnivorous plants only need an insect or two a month in order to flourish. Never use raw meat or cheese, as large pieces will kill the traps. They derive most of their nutrients from trapping and consuming insects. They are also great at getting rid of fruit flies or fungus gnats in your home!

PLANT INFO Carnivorous plants like a potting mixture of equal parts peat and either silica, washed sand, perlite or sphagnum moss. Do not use regular potting mix or any other type of moss. Store bought washed sand may contain minerals so make sure it is thoroughly washed before use.
